The sport of science: Being competitive in STEM

November 16, 2022

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Guest speaker: Dr. Jarrad Hampton-Marcell

Dr. Jarrad Hampton-Marcell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His current research examines the microbial implications on cell and tissue physiology in humans. Utilizing machine learning and in vivo models, he studies the the role short chain fatty acid producers play in shaping bioenergetics, body composition, and gastrointestinal disorders. Prior to UIC, Dr. Hampton-Marcell spent nearly a decade at Argonne National Laboratory studying microbial ecology in the soil, marine, and built-environments. His contributions include the Earth Microbiome Project, American Gut Project, and development of Quantitative Isight into Microbial Ecology - a widely used program for microbial bioinformatics. A first-generation student/researcher/academic, he is heavily involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion co-chairing Argonne’s High School Research Program, HEROH (a sports performance foundation in Chicago), and ISME’s Virtual Microbial Ecology Summit.

Attendees will need to login with their UIC Credentials to UIC Zoom in order to attend the seminars: https://uic.zoom.us/
